What makes Horbury, Horbury?
Could someone recognise our town from just a handful of clues?
Perhaps the unmistakable spire of St Peter’s Church. The story of Onward, Christian Soldiers. A photograph of the Street Fayre. A familiar building, monument or work of art. Or perhaps something much less obvious — an object, person, place, tradition or story that simply says Horbury to you.
We want to find out — and we need your help.
Horbury Civic Society is asking local people to nominate three ‘objects’ that best represent Horbury.
And we’re using the word object very loosely! Your choices can be grand or humble, ancient or modern, beautiful, ordinary, serious or downright quirky. They don’t even have to be physical objects. A person, event, song, legend or tradition can count too.
There are no right or wrong answers. We want to know what Horbury means to you.
Use the form below to tell us your three choices and, if you wish, a few words about why you chose them.
The consultation will remain open until 30 September. We will then bring together the nominations and identify the 50 ‘objects’ that Horbury people feel best tell the story of their town.
Those 50 will become Horbury’s 50 ‘Objects’ — a booklet celebrating the places, people, buildings, events, traditions and oddities that give Horbury its distinctive character.
It will be a portrait of Horbury chosen not by historians or experts, but by the people who know it best — the people of Horbury.
